Costain Group plc
Costain is a major listed public company with worldwide activities in construction and engineering. Direct Rail Services
Direct Rail Services is a wholly owned subsidiary of the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority. Established in 1995, we provide the nuclear industry with a comprehensive range of rail transport services. This includes a 24 hour control centre and engineering support network. You’ll find our head office in the North West of England and depots in the South East, York, Crewe, Sellafield, Grangemouth, and Inverness.
Dounreay – UKAEA
The United Kingdom Atomic Energy Authority is a leader in nuclear clean-up, waste management and environmental restoration. We manage UK site clean-up programmes for the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority and provide technical solutions for a wide range of customers. We’ve a proven record of safely delivering projects and cutting the time and cost of decommissioning programmes. We’re also at the forefront of international fusion research.
Environment Agency
The Environment Agency is the leading public body in England and Wales for protecting and improving the environment. Our work with the nuclear industry includes inspecting sites, checking compliance, and advising on future programmes of work. Any single day can involve us with areas as varied as contaminated land clean-up, maintenance of coastal defences, design of new nuclear power reactors, disposal of hazardous wastes, and changes to legislation.
Jacobs
Jacobs is one of the world’s leading providers of professional technical and EPC (Engineering, Procurements and Construction) services. We employ 51,000 staff world-wide, including over 6,500 in the UK. Our nuclear industry clients range from the civil nuclear operator companies to defence site operators – and we work across construction, operations, waste management and decommissioning.
Magnox North
Magnox North operates a range of sites, including electricity generation at Oldbury in Gloucestershire, Wylfa on the Isle of Anglesey and Maentwrog in North Wales. We also manage the defuelling and decommissioning of former power stations at Chapelcross in Dumfriesshire, Hunterston A in Ayrshire and Trawsfynydd in North Wales. We aim to achieve the safe delivery of these operations and programmes on behalf of the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority.
Magnox South
Magnox South operates a range of sites across the south of the UK. This includes the defuelling and decommissioning of the historic Magnox power stations at Dungeness A in Kent, Sizewell A in Suffolk, Berkeley in Gloucestershire, Bradwell in Essex and Hinkley Point A in Somerset. It’s our goal to achieve the safe and innovative clean-up of the sites that we operate on behalf of the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority.
MoD DE&S
The MOD employs tens of thousands of people and is one of the biggest and most progressive organisations in the country. As well as advising Government Ministers on policy, we repair ships, submarines and aircraft, purchase major weapon systems, develop leading-edge computer applications and ensure the efficacy of our armed forces. Central to delivering the MOD's nuclear programme is Director General Submarines, who embraces the through-life cycle of Future Submarines, Attack Submarines, Submarine Support & Disposal, Nuclear Propulsion, Nuclear Weapons, Strategic Weapons Systems and NATO Submarine Rescue. Nexia
Nexia Solutions is an expert provider of nuclear technology services. We provide tailored solutions through the highest levels of technical innovation and intellectual support. Our history and pedigree can be traced back to the very beginnings of the industry. However, our business was established by British Nuclear Fuels plc in 1996. The government has announced that we’ll form the foundation of a National Nuclear Laboratory, based around our existing capability.
NSAN
The National Skills Academy for Nuclear aims to create, develop and promote world class skills and careers that will support a sustainable future for the UK’s Nuclear industry. Our Head Office in West Cumbria operates as a coordinating centre and standard setter for the whole of the Academy’s network.
Nuclear Decommissioning Authority
The Nuclear Decommissioning Authority was set up by the Government in 2005 to ensure the safe, accelerated and affordable clean–up of the UK’s civil nuclear legacy. We’re responsible for 19 former nuclear industry sites in the UK, and an integrated waste strategy. Our budget from 2008 to 2011 will amount to £8.5 billion: the largest amount of expenditure ever spent on the UK civil nuclear clean–up programme.
Nuclear Industry Association
The Nuclear Industry Association (NIA) is the trade association and representative voice of Britain's civil nuclear industry. We represent more than 150 companies and some 40,000 UK nuclear workers, including the operators of the nuclear power stations, those engaged in decommissioning, waste management, nuclear liabilities management and all aspects of the nuclear fuel cycle. We also represent nuclear equipment suppliers, engineering and construction firms, nuclear research organisations, and legal, financial and consultancy companies. The NIA supports a diverse energy mix for the UK including clean coal, gas, renewables and nuclear.
Nuclear Technologies
Nuclear Technologies employs 90 consultants based in our six UK offices and on our clients’ sites. We’re part of the nuclear division of TÜV SÜD Industry Services, which has a turnover of £60 million and 500 employees. Our core skills centre on the management and analysis of safety, waste, the environment and decommissioning. Our strength lies in the knowledge of our people, and our highly effective management systems.
Nuvia
Nuvia provides a comprehensive range of engineering and consultancy services to the nuclear industry, governments and other customers, particularly where radioactive materials are involved or where innovative solutions to complex problems are required. We’re one of the UK’s leading nuclear support service providers with around 900 staff and annual turnover in the region of £70 million.
Rolls-Royce
Rolls-Royce is a world leader in providing submarine nuclear systems and equipment. We also offer operational advice and in-service support throughout the life cycle of a submarine. Since managing the procurement of Britain’s first submarine pressurised water reactor back in 1959, we have designed, supplied and supported all the reactor systems and equipment that power the Royal Navy’s submarine flotilla.
Sellafield Ltd
Already the country’s leading nuclear business, Sellafield Ltd has ambitions to become the most admired and respected nuclear facility in the world. We’re responsible for the safe delivery of multi–million pound contracts on behalf of the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority. Our projects are globally significant and demand some of the sharpest minds in the business.
Serco Assurance
Serco Assurance has a long history of involvement in the UK nuclear industry, dating back to the early days of research and power generation. We are a leading provider of independent safety, risk and environmental management, plant performance and integrity, and engineering services. The expertise of our staff covers almost every branch of engineering and science. We also operate testing, measurement and research laboratory facilities.
Springfields
Springfields has provided nuclear fuel fabrication services for over 60 years. Ours was the first plant in the world to produce fuel for a commercial power station. We process several thousand tons of uranium a year and manufacture fuel for all major designs of nuclear reactors worldwide. Most of the fuel needs for the UK’s nuclear power stations are met by us and around 15% of all the electricity generated in the UK comes from power stations using our fuel.
Urenco
Urenco is an independent global energy and technology group. We work in the nuclear fuel supply chain – enabling the sustainable generation of electricity for consumers around the world. We operate plants in the UK, The Netherlands and Germany, and we have a fourth enrichment plant under construction in New Mexico, USA. We believe that nuclear power is a vital part of a future energy mix that will deliver a sustainable global energy supply.
Vectra Group
Vectra Group has extensive experience in preparing and producing concise safety reports – known as safety cases – that underpin the safe operation of nuclear plants; from conception to design, commissioning, operation and finally, decommissioning and demolition. We use our extensive experience to identify and assess hazards associated with plant operations and processes. We also help implement and maintain safety cases through our Operations Support activities.
Young Generation Network
The Young Generation Network was created by the British Nuclear Energy Society to promote the knowledge and awareness of this industry between older and younger generations. It encourages younger people to stay within the field and provide a resource for the future. It’s a vehicle for all members, across a full spectrum of careers, to create support networks for personal development and continuous learning.
